Santa Maria della Scala – Opera della Metropolitana di Siena – Pinacoteca Nazionale
In 2010 the museum complex at Santa Maria della Scala in Siena hosts the exhibition “From Jacopo della Quercia to Donatello. The arts in Siena in the early Renaissance” from March 26 to July 11, curated by Max Seidel and dedicated to Sienese art from 1400-1460. An important project which follows the exhibitions dedicated to Beccafumi, Francesco di Giorgio and Duccio di Buoninsegna to close the circle on Sienese art of the 13th-16th centuries. The exhibition aims to offer a full picture of the early Sienese Renaissance, and presents about 200 works of art including paintings, sculptures, illuminations, textiles, and jewellery, divided into eight sections.
The first section introduces the theme of continuity between certain artistic elements of the 15th century in Siena and the important 14th century paintings of Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers, exhibiting a selection of paintings by these masters who represented the source of inspiration for the various generations of Sienese painters fo the 15th century. The exhibition continues chronologically with a section dedicated to Jacopo della Quercia, covering the artist's entire carrer. Next to these will be placed examples of works of the most important painters and sculptors of Siena of that period (Taddeo di Bartolo, Gregorio di Cecco, Francesco di Valdambrino, Domenico di Niccolò) and, to close the section, there will be a consideration of Gentile da Fabriano and his influence on the work of the young Giovanni di Paolo and Della Quercia's work on the baptismal font which saw the artist measure himself against Donatello and Ghiberti.
The third section begins with Stefano di Giovanni known as “Sassetta”, the refined master who gave life to a new chapter in Sienese painting during the second quarter of the 15th century. This overview presents a few of his masterpeices together with important works by his best followers, including Pietro di Giovanni d'Ambrogio, the Master of the Observance and Sano di Pietro. In this segment the exhibition will highlight the modern aspects of the work of Domenicoo di Bartolo in the 1430s, noting the connections with the Florence of Filippo Lippi and Luca della Robbia.
The fourth section closes the chronological portion of the exhibition, carrying us through to the years of Donatello's last stay in Siena (1457-1461) and demonstrating the influence of the Florentine master on the new protagonists of the Sienese style including Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta, Matteo di Giovanni and Antonio Federighi. A fifth section offers rare examples of devotional forms and public art (small triptychs, private devotional paintings, wooden figures of the Baby Jesus, reliquary busts and marriage chests). The final section of the exhibition includes three sections dedicated to illuminated codices, jewellery and textiles.
